An Association of the Catholic Laity

The Solidarity Lay Association is dedicated to embodying a spirituality of Christian solidarity and to supporting the mission activity of the apostolic works to which it is connected: Solidarity Bridge, Puente de Solidaridad, Puente de Solidaridad Internacional and Solidarity Medical Equipping.

We understand solidarity to be both a spiritual gift to be received and a virtue to be cultivated. To be in solidarity is to have an abiding commitment to the common good and to engage in acts that express that commitment.

As people on a mission, we understand that we are partners with God in God’s own project for creation. We are called and sent to participate in this great project, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

We believe Jesus is the incarnation of God’s solidarity with humankind and with all creation. We are disciples of Jesus, members of the Body of Christ, incarnating God’s solidarity in our own time and according to our own gifts.

The Solidarity Lay Association (SLA) is a part of the Solidarity Family made up of a total of five organizations.  The SLA's purpose is to be the structural connection of the above mentioned mission efforts to the Roman Catholic Church as part of the Archdiocese of Chicago in the United States and the Archdiocese of Santa Cruz in Bolivia. Furthermore, its purpose is the promotion of the mission consciousness and spirituality of the other entities of the Solidarity Family.  An apt image of what the Solidarity Lay Association does is to compare it to the person in a Native American ceremony that is charged with being the Firekeeper - the one who makes sure the fire burns continuously and brightly during the ceremony.

Solidarity is a conviction that we are born into a fabric of social relationships, that our humanity ties us to others, that the Gospel consecrates those ties, and that the prophets tell us that those ties are the test by which our holiness will be judged.
